PREPARE. SURVIVE. THRIVE.
Welcome, fellow preppers (and wannabes)
Welcome! My name is Andrea, and I'm a liberal, blue state, left-wing prepper. I'm also a lot of other things, and you can read more about me in the ABOUT section. As an unabashed liberal with an unseemly interest in emergency preparedness, I have always been a bit of a weirdo amongst my peers! I've been interested in preparedness for a long time - ask my family members who've been getting go-bags and dehydrated food for Christmas for years! I started this site in 2017 while dealing with a lot of existential anxiety and uncertainty after the 2016 election. Since I was doing a ton of research on emergency preparedness I figured I might as well share my findings with others. And...here we are again, dealing with the aftermath of the 2024 election. There's a lot of stuff to worry about, but we're all in this together! So, whether you're brand new to the preparedness community, or if you've been interested for a long time -- welcome! The goal with this blog and website is to share my preparedness journey with progressive moms, dads, and other folks who like the idea of being self-reliant and prepared while also being good neighbors and good stewards of our planet. Please explore this site and share it with friends or family who might be interested! |

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
WHERE TO START?
WHERE TO START?
When an emergency is imminent (i.e. - a hurricane is coming or a blizzard is en route) that is NOT the time to race to the store for supplies. If you've ever done it, you quickly realize a harsh reality:
There are not enough supplies at your store(s) for everyone in town. Not even close.
Not only milk, eggs and bread will be gone, but also all of the bottled water, the batteries, matches, lighters and candles will be sold out. I've experienced this firsthand -- we don't get hurricanes, here, but impending wind or snowstorms bring out the barely contained hysteria in my town. Even though we HAVE plenty of supplies at home, it's a scary feeling to see those empty shelves! You still feel nervous -- should I have MORE??
SO -- we all need to stock up on the non-perishables and other supplies BEFORE the emergency is bearing down on us! Granted, you may still end up duking it out with your neighbors over the last carton of eggs (unless you have a chicken coop, like I hope to build this year!) but at least you'll be able to eat your powdered/reconstituted egg scramble by candlelight with a nice big glass of water
(assuming you took the higher road re: that last egg carton).

While you're stocking up on the basic supplies, you should also be putting together your Get Home Bag, or Bug Out Bag. A Get Home Bag is a necessity in case you're away from home when disaster strikes, or if you need to leave home to head for safer/higher ground.
- You should have enough in your bag(s) for all members of your family, and don't forget about your pets!

WAY TO GO!! You've read this far, which means you're at least thinking about starting to
get on track with preparedness.
Once you've gathered the basic/essentials for your home and vehicle,
it's time to increase your preparedness a little bit more.
Yes, power outages usually last less than 1 day, and snow storms don't go on forever,
but what about after an earthquake? A hurricane? A flood? Do you live in a big city or in a rural area?
How long will it take for help to arrive?
BEYOND THE BASICS
Where I live we were recently told that in the largest cities people should have 2 weeks of emergency food on hand, and in the rural areas we should have 4 weeks of emergency food stocked. Whoa. 4 weeks is quite a while to be without electricity, emergency medical care, and of course, easy access to food and water. What would be comforting for me and my family/friends to eat during those 4 weeks. What would we need in order to survive without problems? And what could we do to keep ourselves occupied and keep from freaking out?
LONG-TERM SURVIVAL
There are MANY questions related to long-term "off the grid" survival that aren't addressed in basic emergency preparedness brochures and checklists.I've compiled the best information I could find about how to take care of ourselves and those we love after the power (and plumbing) stop working and we are forced to save ourselves.
