I hate to be trendy, but things are a-changing in the Prepper culture. While traditional right-wing survivalists were motivated in great numbers by the housing market crash of 2008, the subsequent economic downturn, and the election of a liberal democrat black president, the tables have now turned. Liberal democrats and independents are now faced with the specter of 8 years of what they fear will be a turning back of the clock. What better time is there to start thinking about how to prepare for Armageddon? Or at least stock up on batteries and a few week’s supply of food.
When most people think of “survivalists” or “preppers,” they often think of white dudes in camo with gun racks in their trucks and well-stocked home bunkers who are super thrilled, right now, that a right-wing populist is leader of the land. Female preppers, although less common, have recently been gaining respect in the Survivalist culture. And then, there’s me. What do you call a grad-school educated vegetarian white female who listens to NPR, raises chickens and bees, and has a year’s supply of food in her bunker/safe room? Yes, there’s wifi in this well-stocked room. And, of course, a battery/crank powered radio with which to listen to All Things Considered while holed up! But I know how to start a fire with MacGyver supplies like Vaseline and dryer lint, how to splint a compound fracture and apply a tourniquet, and I’m becoming increasingly comfortable with self- and home-defense. If you’re left-wing, right-wing or wingless, you are welcome here! I’m not here to talk about politics (that much) – I just want to share what I have learned about how to keep yourself, your family and your community safe and happy no matter what’s heading your way. PREPARE, SURVIVE AND THRIVE - that’s my goal for my family and for you! Regardless of the disasters we may encounter: earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, pandemic flu, an EMP or other terrorist attack, prolonged visits from out-of-town guests (right???) the better prepared we are, the better off we and our friends and families will be! So, there you go! With the world the way it is right now, fraught with conflict and insecurity, there’s just something reassuring about a pantry full of canned goods, a go-bag in your trunk and the knowledge that you have the skills and the tools to keep yourself and your family safe in emergencies and times of trouble. If this kind of stuff keeps you up late at night while your family members snooze peacefully, welcome to my world!
